Become part of an ongoing exploration of ‘Inside Out’ through art. Join three Gage Gallery artists - Deborah Leigh, Tanya Bub and Gabriela Hirt - who set out to explore what fearless self-expression means to them, and to others.
Everyone is invited to participate: Come and make marks inside the Gallery during the exhibition or sketch at home and post online to #gageinsideout. There will be large-scale community doodling on paper together with the artists outside the Gallery on Oak Bay Avenue. Check @gage_gallery_arts on Instagram or updates on this page for dates and times.
Sketching & painting are a way to express feelings and experiences, to show what is meaningful to us.
In this live-art-project, which is part of a larger show concept, you are encouraged to share some inner aspect of you on paper. The idea is to let marks evolve intuitively, rather than focus on a specific outcome. You don’t need to be an artist to do this! Draw with your non-dominant hand, with your eyes closed, very fast with a timer on, listen to your favourite song - you get the gist. Not to say we are not interested in the ‘polished You’ as well, if that’s what you want us to see....
Selected submissions will be compiled into the ‘Inside Out’ book telling the visual story of what is meaningful to people of all ages in the larger community. The finished book will be exhibited in June. Ashley Riddett, University of Victoria Art History and Visual Studies post graduate student, is the book’s Curator, and she is available for questions via email firstname.lastname@example.org. She will also happily receive your submissions via email.
While creating fresh new paintings and sculptures for this show, Deborah Leigh, Tanya Bub and Gabriela Hirt, have documented their own Inside Out-journey by journaling about their experiences and process. To inspire and encourage each other, they talk daily about their process in a group chat. The resulting sketchbooks will be part of the exhibit for a candid behind-the-scenes look into the creative process.
